Chiang Mai flood, a 50 1.4 appeared

My office…

In the early of October there are 2 times flood in my city. My camera and the equipment are fine, I took it with me.

After that, our office needs to be cleaned. So, I arranged the stuff that was filled with mud since my department is located near the river.

A day before flood

I found a VERY Similar object. I swiped the mud off from it.

The rubber fell off

A Yashica film camera with the lens on it. First, I didn’t realize what kind of lens was attached with. Come to think of it, that would be a manual lens for sure – Till I removed the filter off, the letters and numbers, a Carl Zeiss T* 50 1.4 planar was found.

I tried to find the equipment registered number, but nothing was found. So, I took all of them to the head department and asked him about the camera’s status.

The head department took a photo and sent it to a supplies admin.

“It already was stated as a damaged equipment before the flood. So, you’re free to have it.” He replied and gave me back the pile of mud with the camera.

Poor Yashica

It seems that the body is unable to repair, but the lens is still usable.

“The lens and camera, both have the same registered number. If one of them was stated as damaged, then both will be retired.” What a waste.

500 THB for cleaning and repairing the diaphragm blades. It’s a decent price for a manual lens. The owner of the repair shop said. He is a guy who repairs any manual lenses equally. He doesn’t care about cheap or expensive lenses and always calls the same price. (Replacement parts are exceptions)

Finally, he revealed the fine coating, the smooth focal ring and the diaphragm blades with CY mount – Carl Zeiss 50 1.4 is ready to use (CY to EOS adaptor was applied)

So clear

On the way back home – I rode my bike past the used Japanese imported goods. Found a boxes of lens cover, filters and the lens cap.

I hoped that I could find some cover and filter for Carl Zeiss. But, that day must be the day for all 50 1.4s, I was shaking and laughing to myself that I found EF 50 1.4’s hood (ES-71) for 3 USD and a cover for Carl Zeiss for 1 USD. It will be the day that I will remember till my last day. I dare to tell my wife the exact price of repairing 500 THB, 100 THB for a hood and 30 THB for a cover!!
